TSF rolls out pilot program to help farmers The Sportsmens Foundation launched the affordable-seed program both to help farmers and to provide migrating waterfowl with one of their favorite foods. The one condition of buying the wheat through TSF is that farmers are asked to make some available to the wildlife. Its a wonderful cycle, said foundation president Shane Johnson. Farmers are key in helping to maintain wildlife habitat, and they should get a pat on the back every now and then. But encouraging farmers to plant wheat, we also really want to help keep Texas a friendly place for these birds, and a leader in habitat management. In its inaugural year, the program will be available to farmers across the state, though it is focusing on the greater Houston area specifically. Interested parties should contact The Sportsmens Foundation directly to learn more about the program. Waterfowl biologist David Lobpries of Texas Parks and Wildlife, which works closely with The Sportsmens Foundation, said: This program is a win-win for everyone. It provides great browse for the birds and is a good deal for farmers. Lobpries continued: Less rice is being planted year after year, and geese will be looking for other options once those resources are depleted. It seems to me that the cost The Sportsmens Foundation is asking per bag is about one-third or better of what a farmer would typically pay. Active since 1998, The Sportsmens Foundation was created to bring
together outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife conservation groups to realize
shared goals. The foundation organizes activities in which disparate groups
work to educate the public, improve habitat, and increase awareness of
common interests between various organizations. |
